Marine Protected Areas

Marine Protected Areas are tools used in marine conservation around the globe. They come in a variety of different levels of protection to achieve different goals and can range from full fishing bans to specific gear limitations and seasonal closures. Marine Protected Areas have been linked to increases in fish numbers and biodiversity, benefiting both fishermen and the environment.

Historically in New Zealand Marine Protected Areas have been formed through government initiatives. At the Sustainable Ocean Society we’d like to work with communities who are conservation minded and think that an MPA would enhance their local environment. By bringing our expertise to the table we think that we will be able to work well with communities to achieve their marine conservation goals.

We would like to develop a Marine Protected Area Tool Kit, containing information to answer any questions communities may have about MPAs and to assist them with their planning. More information coming soon
